Shoulder dislocations most commonly occur in the anterior (forward) direction. As the humeral head slips out of the glenoid during the dislocation, it also strips the front part of the labrum away from the glenoid rim. This is called a Bankart lesion. The most commonly used method for the surgical treatment of shoulders that dislocate forward repeatedly is Bankart repair.
Bankart repair can be performed either open or closed, that is, arthroscopically. It involves reattaching the anterior labrum that has been stripped from the glenoid rim back into place. This is usually done by placing small anchors along the glenoid rim and stitching the labrum back into position with the sutures attached to these anchors. When this procedure is performed closed, with shoulder arthroscopy, highly successful results are achieved.
